Sioux Falls Marathon Volunteer Opportunities

We can't thank you enough for being interested in volunteering at the Sioux Falls Marathon! Our routes cover over 30 miles of this beautiful city and our amazing volunteers are out on every part of the routes! Without you, this event wouldn't be possible!

Volunteer Job Descriptions

Tuesday, September 3 (and Wednesday, September 4 if needed)

Inventory Race Shirts (1- 3 p.m.)

Inventory Race Medals (1-3 p.m.)

Saturday, September 7

Race Bib Check-In Table

(9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 11:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m., 2:15 p.m.-5:00 p.m. and/or 4:45 p.m.-7:30 p.m.)

  • In order to pick up race bib, runners will need to know their bib number 

  • Runners may need assistance with locating number

  • This table is set up inside the PREMIER Center for runners to find that number

Packet Pick-up

(shifts = 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 11:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m., 2:15 p.m.-5:00 p.m. and/or 4:45 p.m.-7:30 p.m.)

  • Hand out race packets, goody bags, shirts, etc. to runners inside the PREMIER Center

  • Check runners into the race

  • Be a positive and welcoming first impression. Thank them for coming and wish them good luck!

Wermerson Youth Dash (shifts = 10:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m.  or 1- 3:15 p.m.)

  • Explain the instructions for the Wermerson Youth Dash to participants inside the PREMIER Center

  • Instruct participants to complete waiver if registering on site

  • Monitor race and assist with distribution of prizes to those who complete the activity

Sunday, September 8

Route Support (time commitment dependent of location on route)

  • Keep traffic (pedestrian & vehicles) off of the route, communicate with them that a race is in progress. Be kind and courteous!

  • Cheer on participants as they run by. Make a funny sign, wear a costume, bring some musics, HAVE FUN! 

  • Communicate any medical issues to medical personnel

  • A great way for a group of friends/employees to get together and work as a team!

Finish Line (shifts = 7-10 a.m.or 10 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.)

  • Hand out finisher medals inside the PREMIER Center

  • Direct them to the food/drinks

  • Assist runners as needed

  • Congratulate runners on a job well done!

Door Watcher (shifts = 5-9 a.m. or 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

  • Assist with watching entrance areas

  • Some are closed off to the general public while other will be watching for traffic flow inside the PREMIER Center

Bag Drop - Start (5-9 a.m.)

  • Organize bags left by runners according to bib number inside the PREMIER Center

  • Inform runners that they will be able to pick up their bags at the same location after the race

Bag Drop - Finish (9 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

  • Return bags to runners inside the PREMIER Center

  • Assist them as needed

  • Thank runners for their participation and congratulate them!

Print Out Receipt Table (shifts = 7:30-10:30 a.m. or 10:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m.)

  • The table will be located inside the PREMIER Center

  • Assist race finishers on printing their splits and overall place within their race

  • Opportunity to interact with runners and congratulate them on their finish!

Miracle 5k Start Area (8-11 a.m.)

  • Assist with the set up and tear down of the Miracle 5k start area

  • Some heavy lifting and bending will occur

Youth Groups, Teams and Non Profit Opportunity

The Sioux Falls Marathon volunteer program donates $50 to each qualified volunteer group of at least 10 people, and $150 to each qualified volunteer group of at least 25 people.

Groups that qualify are local youth, high school, college and amateur teams/activities, as well as local Non-Profit organizations. Each group can put together as many groups as they would like, we just ask that each group has a different leader.
